Negarakuku lad now in trouble with school

CONTROVERSY seems to follow rapper Wee Meng Chee wherever he goes, reported major Chinese dailies.

The three newspapers, Sin Chew Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press reported that Wee, who caused an uproar with his parody of the Negaraku last year, had been issued a legal notice by his alma mater, Chung Hwa High School.

The notice was to remove his latest recording from YouTube entitled “The ABC Time of Teacher Khoo”.

The school in Muar had demanded that the recording, which used the school as the backdrop while criticising the Malaysian Chinese education system, be removed.

The school said it had not given permission to Wee to use the school as a backdrop in his recording.

China Press reported that Wee had been served the legal papers at his home in Muar, Johor, on Monday.

Asked how he felt about the legal papers, Wee said that he was not surprised.

In his blog, Wee said the legal papers had helped raise awareness about his latest effort and problems faced by independent school students.

Criticising the local Chinese education system as being incomplete, Wee said it would force Chinese school graduates to look for alternatives to make a living.

Wee, who is better known as “Namewee”, made the controversial Negarakuku video while he was studying Mass Communication in Taiwan’s Ming Chuan University.

Wee Meng Chee[1] (traditional Chinese: 黃明志; simplified Chinese: 黄明志; pinyin: Huáng Míng Zhì; Hainanese Pinyin: Wee Meng Chee) (born 1983 in Muar, Johor[2] ) was a Malaysian Chinese undergraduate student majoring in Mass Communication at Ming Chuan University, in Taipei, Taiwan ROC. He is also commonly known under the alias Namewee.

Wee gained notoriety after releasing a controversial song fused with the national anthem of Malaysia, Negaraku, which describes the state of the country and its government. In the following weeks, the song increasingly drew both praise and criticism from various quarters of Malaysian society, and prompted the government of Malaysia to voice the possibility of action against Wee.

S’porean trio found guilty of wearing T-shirts

S’porean trio found guilty of wearing T-shirts
By GOH CHIN LIAN

SINGAPORE: Three men who wore T-shirts depicting a kangaroo dressed in judge’s robes were found to be in contempt of court after a day-long hearing on Monday.

Justice Judith Prakash adjourned the hearing shortly after making her decision so the men could decide if they wanted to apologise and withdraw the insinuations they had made about the courts.

But the trio -- full-time national serviceman Muhammad Shafi’ie Syahmi Sariman, 20; Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) assistant secretary-general John Tan Liang Joo, 47; and activist Isrizal Mohamed Isa, 33 -- refused to do so after the 15-min break.

Muhammad Shafi’ie cited “personal convictions.” Isrizal said he would not apologise as he had no intention of impugning the court and did not think wearing a T-shirt would amount to that.

Tan refused to apologise as he believed his actions were about fair criticism.

Justice Prakash said she could not agree with him and adjourned the hearing till Thursday when she will deliver her verdict on their sentence.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) initiated contempt of court proceedings against the trio for having “scandalised the Singapore Judiciary by publicly wearing identical white T-shirts, imprinted with a palm-sized picture of a kangaroo dressed in a judge’s gown, within and in the vicinity of the New Supreme Court Building.”

They wore the T-shirts between May 26 and May 28 at the Supreme Court.

This was when they attended hearings before Justice Belinda Ang to assess defamation damages that the SDP, its leader Chee Soon Juan and his sister Chee Siok Chin had to pay Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

At Monday’s hearing, Deputy Solicitor-General Jeffrey Chan sought stiff jail terms and cited two reasons.

Firstly, the worst insult that someone can level against the judicial system is to call it a kangaroo court, he said.

The term is generally understood to mean a court that is characterised by unauthorised or irregular procedures, or sham and unfair legal proceedings.

Secondly, the men’s refusal to apologise reaffirmed their contempt of court.

Chan urged Justice Prakash to pass a sentence that would denounce such a show of contempt and deter others from acting in the same way.

The men argued separately that they had no intention of publicising their actions, which they said were merely a form of self-expression.

They instead blamed The Straits Times for giving their actions wide publicity through a photograph in its May 27 edition showing them in the T-shirts.

Isrizal also said the image on the T-shirt was not a kangaroo. He said the animal was a wallaby and added that someone asked if it was a chihuahua.

Tan also denied making the remark, “This is a kangaroo court,” as MM Lee walked past him outside Court 4B.

Chan said that while Tan denied making the remark, he did not deny evidence that he pointed to the kangaroo image when MM Lee walked past him.

Tan also did not deny that he committed contempt of court “by posting or acquiescing in the posting” of an article on the SDP website on July 27 about the trio being questioned by police.

That article included a photograph of the trio wearing the T-shirts.

The court was also shown closed-circuit TV footage of Tan distributing the T-shirts, and of the T-shirt-clad trio being photographed by the media at the entrance to the Supreme Court building.

Although they argued that they were taking personal photographs and tried to stop the media, Chan noted that they stood before the media for 26 seconds.

“If they were that keen not to be photographed, one would have expected they would have walked away as soon as pressmen gathered,” he said. -- ANN/ The Straits Times

Malaysia petrol price @ RM1.85 per liter?

Sunday November 23, 2008
Petrol prices likely to come down by another 15 sen
By MAZWIN NIK ANIS

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysians can look forward to another 15 sen cut in fuel price by the end of the month, bringing pump prices to a two-year low of RM1.85 per litre.

The lowest price the people paid for fuel prior to the recent escalating global oil prices was RM1.92 per litre in March 2006 before it was increased to RM2.70 per litre on June 5, this year.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad said further reduction was “not impossible” judging from the decline in global prices for the commodity.

“Malaysians can expect good news and pay less for petrol. As it is, consumers have been paying unsubsidised petrol the past few days.

“But the Government will have to continue to subsidise diesel and gas so the money is channelled for these purposes,” he said after attending the ministry’s family day yesterday.

On Nov 18, the Government slashed prices of petrol and diesel by 15sen.

The current pump price for RON97 is RM2 per litre while RON92 is sold at RM1.90 per litre. Diesel is sold at RM1.90 per litre.

Shahrir said while Malaysians were now paying slightly more for fuel than the market price, the additional money paid by consumers went back to the Government’s coffers and did not increase revenue collected by petrol companies or stations.

“Even the Government is not making money from the difference. This is because we have paid RM15bil to date this year in subsidy and there are other things that continue to need subsidy.”

He said the decline in global oil prices reflected weakening in demand, which could also be dangerous as this showed that people were not spending and that economies were weak.

The minister said he had emphasised to traders time and again to bring down the price of goods as reasonably priced goods would create higher demand.

The international oil price is below USD50 per barrel which mean we should enjoying around RM1.50++ per litre. We already being affected due to the 78 cents hike in June 08! all the food price has gone way up as now even after the Government reduce the price again & again the price of goods has not gone down yet. It seems that increasing in price is much easier than lowering the price.

Madagascar 2: Escape To Africa

This film was one of the funniest animation I have ever seen, with good storyline and hilarious dialogue this movie set a new animation benchmark. This film is a sequel to Madagascar and there is a plan to film Madagascar 3 which will be released in 2011. The story started where it ends in the 1st movie which they are trap in Madagascar after their ship sank. This time they try to return to New York through an abandoned airplane. Their plan to return to New York was failed as there is a malfunctioning of the airplane engine and they crash landed in Africa. This film is definitely recommended especially those who loves Madagascar 1.

007 : Quantum Of Solace

I might a little late for this movie review as it has been on cinema for almost 1 month. However just to share my 2 cent opinion for this movie. When I watch the movie about 3 weeks ago, I went into the cinema with high expectation as I like the previous movie ( 007 : Casino Royale ).
This movie contained a lot of great stunt and car chase but the plot was a bit too rush. I also noted the way they address the place in the movie is very unique( watch it and you will know ). In the end of the movie there is part was abit funny, what the heck they hold a negotiation in a building full of explosive??. But this movie is overall is not that bad.
Definitely recommended.
